Used Tractors in Dorset: What a Good Independent Tractor Dealer Actually Does

There are two ways to buy a used tractor. You can buy the advert, or you can buy the dealer.

Buying the advert is how most people get stung. The photographs are flattering, the description is vague, the hours are whatever the clock says, and the first you hear about the weep off the back end is when it lands in your own yard.

Buying the dealer is slower to start and cheaper to finish.

What Separates the Good Tractor Dealers from the Rest

Ask any farmer who has bought half a dozen machines over the years and they will tell you the same things.

The description matches the machine. Not flattering, not vague. If there is a knock, you should hear about it from the dealer before you hear it from your fitter.

The machine has been through a workshop. Not jet washed and photographed. Actually looked at, with fluids, lights, linkage and wear points checked by somebody who knows what they are looking for.

Somebody picks up the phone afterwards. This is the whole game. Anyone can sell you a tractor. The measure of a dealer is what happens three weeks later when something is not right.

They will tell you when they cannot help. A dealer who occasionally says no is worth ten who never do.

Featured Dealer: Tom Ray Tractor Sales, West Dorset

Tom Ray Tractor Sales is an independent dealer based between Bridport and Axminster in West Dorset, supplying good quality affordable second-hand agricultural and construction machinery.

They sell to farmers, smallholders, landscapers, collectors and exporters, and they buy tractors, agricultural, plant and construction machinery as well. Finance and delivery can both be arranged.

What is worth noting is how they describe their own pricing. They are open about the fact they may sit slightly above some competitors, and equally open about why: they do not walk away when something goes wrong. In a trade where plenty of yards vanish the moment the money clears, that is a reasonable thing to pay a bit more for.

Every machine goes through the workshop as standard. Oil and water levels, lights, top links and balls all checked. New seats fitted where needed. Machines greased, run and worked on their own farm to make sure they are genuinely up to the job before they go out. Full servicing is negotiable separately, as is warranty.

Tom and Jack run it between them, and if they have not got what you are after, they will go and find it.

Buying Used Agri Machinery: What to Check Before You Commit

Whether you are buying in Dorset or two hundred miles away, the same checks apply.

Hours, and whether they stand up. Ask directly. Wear on the seat, steps, pedals and steering wheel should broadly match the clock.

Cold start it yourself. A machine that has been running for twenty minutes before you arrive is hiding something more often than not.

Hydraulics under load. Not just lifted and dropped in the yard. Work them.

Front axle and kingpins on four wheel drive. Expensive, and the first thing that gets glossed over.

Transmission through every range. All of them, not the two the salesman picks.

Parts availability before you buy, not after. A cheap machine you cannot get spares for is not cheap.

Paperwork. Service history, ownership, any outstanding finance. Get it settled before the machine moves.

Where to Look for Used Tractors and Agri Machinery

The used machinery market has shifted a good deal in recent years, and some of the names people still search for have changed hands or changed names entirely.

Farmers Trader, for one, was a familiar name in the UK used farm machinery market and now trades as Autotrader Farm. If you have been typing the old name into Google and wondering where it went, that is where it went.

Plant And Tractor Trader is an independent marketplace covering plant, agricultural, haulage and commercial machinery across the UK and Ireland. Around 30,000 visitors a month, 15,000 email subscribers and 35,000 Facebook followers, with dealer profiles and stock listed from across both markets.

For Dealers: Getting Your Stock and Your Name in Front of Buyers

If you are a tractor dealer, plant dealer or machinery trader, buyers are researching you online before they ring, even when they fully intend to buy locally.

Two things make the difference:

A listing presence where buyers are already looking. Advertise with Plant And Tractor Trader and get your stock in front of an audience that is already in the market.

A website that works. We build and host tractor dealer websites and machinery dealer sites across the UK and Ireland. Fast, mobile first, built around stock and enquiries rather than looking pretty. Hosted dealer websites from £750+VAT to build, no monthly contracts, hosting from £225+VAT/year from year two.

We know this trade because we run in it.
