Claas Tractors: The Complete Guide to Buying, Selling and Advertising Used Claas
Few tractor brands hold their value like Claas. Walk any UK farm sale and the green and red machines go early, and they go firm. If you are buying one, selling one, or trying to get yours in front of the right people, this guide covers what actually matters.

A quick word on where Claas tractors come from
Claas is a German family firm out of Harsewinkel, best known for a century of harvesting machinery. The tractor side arrived properly in 2003 when Claas took over Renault Agriculture, and the tractors are still built at Le Mans in France.
That history matters when you are looking at used stock. Anything from the mid 2000s in the Ares, Celtis, Atles or Nectis ranges carries plenty of Renault DNA, and the transition period machines are worth knowing about. Everything from the Arion and Axion ranges onward is properly Claas.
The Claas tractor ranges explained
Claas Elios is the compact end. Around 70 to 100hp, simple, narrow enough for livestock buildings and yard work, and popular with smallholdings and contractors who need something that fits through a door.
Claas Nexos is the specialist range, built narrow for orchards, vineyards and hop gardens. A niche machine in the UK, which means when one comes up for sale it often sells nationally rather than locally.
Claas Arion is the range most UK farms know. Roughly 90 to 200hp depending on series, covering the 400, 500 and 600 lines. This is the working end of the market, loader work, grassland, mixed farming, and the bulk of used Claas stock you will see advertised. Transmission choice matters here, with Quadrishift and Hexashift on the powershift side and Cmatic giving you a stepless CVT.
Claas Axion steps up to the arable end, roughly 200 to 445hp across the 800 and 900 series. Heavy draft work, big cultivation kit, and the Axion 900 Terra Trac brought half tracks to the range for anyone battling compaction.
Claas Xerion is the top of the tree. Four equal wheels, enormous power, and a cab that on some versions rotates to face the rear. Slurry contractors and large scale arable operators buy these. There are not many about, so a used one attracts interest from a long way away.
Alongside the tractors sit the Scorpion telehandlers and Torion wheel loaders, plus of course the harvesting kit Claas built its name on: Lexion, Trion and Tucano combines, Jaguar foragers, Quadrant, Variant and Rollant balers, Disco mowers, Liner rakes and Volto tedders.
Buying a used Claas tractor: what to check
Hours against age. A well maintained Arion at 8,000 hours can be a better buy than a neglected one at 4,000. Ask for the service history and look for evidence rather than assurances.
Transmission type and condition. Cmatic CVT machines are superb to drive but you want to know the transmission has been serviced properly and hear it under load. Powershift Hexashift and Quadrishift boxes are robust, but check the shifting is clean through the range.
Front axle suspension and linkage. Proline and suspended front axles transform ride quality and are worth paying for. Check bushes and rams for play.
Loader and brackets. A Claas with a factory fitted FL loader and the right subframe is worth noticeably more than a machine with an aftermarket loader bolted on. Confirm what is included, brackets and headstock especially.
Electronics and terminal. Cebis and CIS terminals are generally reliable, but check every function works and that guidance and ISOBUS licences, if fitted, actually transfer with the machine.
Tyres. On a big Axion or Xerion, a full set is thousands. Factor it into what you offer.
PTO, spools and hydraulics. Count the spools, check flow, and make sure they match the implements you intend to run.
Selling a Claas: why the audience matters more than the advert
Here is the thing about Claas that catches sellers out. The buyer is often not local.
A Ford or a Massey has buyers in every parish. Claas has a following, and that following will travel. Somebody in Cornwall will drive to Cumbria for the right Axion. Somebody in the Republic will ship an Arion across if the spec is right. Narrow your advertising to your county and you are talking to a fraction of the people who want your machine.
That works the other way too. A Claas advertised nationally, with proper photographs and a full spec, will usually beat the same machine advertised locally with three pictures and a phone number.

Claas dealer websites: the other half of the job
A marketplace listing puts your machine in front of buyers who are already looking. Your own website is what convinces them you are worth ringing, and it is where somebody lands when they Google your business name after seeing an advert.
We build websites for tractor and machinery dealers, and only for this industry. A proper dealer site means a page for every machine, so each Claas you have in stock can turn up in Google on its own merits rather than being buried inside a marketplace. It means stock you update from your phone in the yard. It means sold machines coming down in one tap rather than embarrassing you for a fortnight.

Featured tractor dealer website design: Hawkes Agri Sales
That write-up covers how the site was put together, how the stock system works and what a dealer site actually needs to earn its keep. If you are running a Claas dealership, or an independent yard that trades Claas alongside everything else, it is the model to look at.
Builds are a fixed one-off cost with no contract and no monthly fee, four to five days from start to live, and you own the domain and the site outright. Full detail on the digital marketing services page.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find used Claas tractors for sale in the UK? Our listings carry used Claas tractors and machinery from dealers and private sellers across the UK and Ireland. You can also find dealers directly through our dealer directory.
Are Claas tractors expensive to run? Parts and servicing sit in line with the other premium European brands. The bigger factor is the dealer network near you, so it is worth knowing where your nearest Claas support is before you buy.
Which Claas tractor is best for livestock and loader work? Most people land on an Arion, with an Elios suiting smaller yards and lower buildings. Loader visibility and turning circle matter more than raw horsepower for that work.
Do Claas tractors hold their value? Generally yes, and better than many. Specification drives it. Front linkage, suspended axle, CVT transmission and a factory loader all hold money.
How do I sell my Claas tractor? Advertise it where the buyers are, nationally rather than locally, with good photographs, honest hours and a full spec. If you are a dealer, our unlimited listings package covers your whole yard for a flat annual fee.
Do you list Claas machinery as well as tractors? Yes. Combines, foragers, balers, mowers, rakes, tedders, telehandlers and implements all go on at no extra cost.
