Why a mobile plant engineer needs a website more than most businesses

There is a common assumption in this trade that a website is for people selling machines. Dealers need one, the argument goes, because they have stock to show. A repair business works off word of mouth and the phone rings anyway.

It is a reasonable assumption and it is wrong, for one specific reason.

When a machine goes down, the person ringing round is not shopping. They are stuck. A telehandler has failed on a site with a full crew standing about, or a loading shovel has gone at the worst possible moment. Every hour costs money. That person does not have time to ask around, and if the fitter they normally use is three days out, they are searching for somebody else right now.

What do they type? “Plant repairs near me.” “Mobile plant engineer Scunthorpe.” “JCB repairs North Lincolnshire.” “Plant fitter callout.”

Whoever appears at that moment gets the call. Not the best engineer in the county. The one who is findable.

That is a different kind of enquiry to almost anything else in this industry. It is urgent, it is high intent, and it is entirely decided by search. Word of mouth is superb at bringing in the customers who already know you. It does absolutely nothing for the site manager forty minutes away who has never heard your name and needs somebody today.

LOLER inspections are the other half of it

The repair side is reactive. The inspection side is not, and it is the part that builds a proper business.

LOLER inspections are a legal requirement. Lifting equipment has to be thoroughly examined at set intervals, and someone has to be responsible for making sure it happens. That means every plant hire company, groundworks contractor, farm and builders merchant with lifting equipment needs a competent person on the books, permanently and on a repeating cycle.

Those buyers behave completely differently to the breakdown customer. They are not panicking. They are checking. Is this outfit competent, insured and properly qualified to sign off an inspection that has to stand up if something goes wrong?

That question cannot be answered by a phone call alone, and it certainly cannot be answered by a Facebook page. It needs somewhere a compliance minded customer can go and satisfy themselves. Get that right and you are not chasing one job, you are picking up a schedule of inspections that repeats every six or twelve months for as long as they own the equipment.

What plant industry website design actually involves

Each of those is a different search with a different customer behind it, and each needs its own page for Google to rank it. Lumping them into a single “Services” page means competing for nothing in particular.

Proper local coverage. A mobile business is defined by its radius, not its address. The site needs to make clear where they actually travel, because a customer twenty five miles away will not assume you come to them unless you say so.

A phone number that is one tap away on every screen. The breakdown customer is standing in a yard on a phone with dirty hands. If they have to hunt for the number, they have already rung somebody else.

Fast on rural mobile data. These customers are on sites and farms, not sitting at a desk on fibre. A slow loading page loses them before it appears.

Credentials made obvious. Insurance, qualifications, competency for LOLER, the makes they specialise in. This is what turns a browser into a caller.

None of that is complicated, but it is the difference between a site that looks nice and a site that answers the phone.
